We went to Aya town as fieldwork for my Area Studies class. First, we went to Kawanaka camping area in Aya town where you can also experience forest therapy. Aya town has a huge broad-leaved evergreen forest, so Aya town is a good place for forest therapy. Forest therapy means walking in the forest to relax and find balance in your mind or heart. While walking in the forest, we came in contact with nature and saw many historical artifacts. The forest therapy guide gave us information about these. In the inner part of the forest, we started forest therapy. First, we lay down on the ground. After that, we took deep breaths and listened to nature sounds. It was very relaxing.

After we did forest therapy in Kawanaka camping area, we visited Hayakawa farm. At Hayakawa farm we ate organic lunch and helped with farm work a little. The organic lunch was made by Ms. Hayakawa, and made from organic ingredients, which were grown by her and her staff. During the lunch, she talked about organic farming and why she started an organic farm. Organic farming means growing farm products without any chemicals. Usually, many farmers use insecticides for farming because insects spoil farm products. It is easier to grow crops with insecticides; however, there is a very deep reason why she doesn’t use chemical materials such as insecticides for farming. When she was young, she heard about one woman’s tragedy. At that time, farmers used very dangerous chemicals for farming. They diluted them with water. One day, the woman was carrying a full barrel of the chemicals on her back. When she bent her back to pick up something on the ground, the chemicals spilled from the barrel on her head. Of course, the woman was not safe. That’s why Ms. Hayakawa doesn’t use chemical materials for farming in order not to cause such a tragedy again.

I thought that the forest is a valuable place, because we cannot see such a great forest anywhere. Hayakawa farm was also a very good place for me because I’m interested in organic farming in Aya town. Aya town is well known as a town that has succeeded in keeping organic farming for long time. I was able to learn how they do organic farming and the good points of organic farming. Also, I enjoyed a healthy lunch at Hayakawa farm. I liked Aya town before this fieldwork, but I didn’t know about forest therapy and organic farming. It was a very good chance to see the good points of Aya town. Aya town has a close relationship with nature. I hope that Aya town will be one of the great towns and sightseeing spots in Japan.

For my individual fieldwork work for the course, I chose to work in Aya town and visited the office 6 times. I translated documents of sightseeing facilities in Aya town into English. In Aya town, there are a lot of sightseeing spots, but there was still a lot of information that was not translated. The supervisor of the project was Ms. Yamashita who works at Aya Town Office as an interpreter. She is good at using English, but she had no time to attend to all the translation problems in Aya town. I visited Aya town office with Naho Arima and helped Ms. Yamashita translate. It was a great opportunity for us because both of us are interested in Aya town and city office’s work.

At first, we went around the town facilities investigating and finding things that should be translated into English. I visited Ayagawaso inn, Teruha-no-mori inn and Aya Castle. Ayagawaso inn is a small inn for tourists. It has a hot spring, modern restaurant and traditional Japanese style restaurant. There was no English information in Ayagawaso inn, so we took information sheets of the inn, room charge, the hot spring and menus for the restaurants. We thought they should be translated for people who do not understand Japanese. Teruha-no-mori inn is located next to Ayagawaso inn. It is mainly for sport athletes who come to Aya town for sport training camps. A lot of sport teams visit Aya town every year. These sport teams have international sport athletes, so English information is necessary in the inn. We also took information sheets of the inn, room charge, restaurant and hot spring. After we finished translating them, we visited Aya castle. Aya castle receives a lot of international tourists these days, but the explanations of exhibited items were not translated, so we took pictures of them and started translating them.

Investigation of these three places was interesting. We had to think about what is necessary information or not. I heard from my teacher that translating information for sightseeing spots is a big problem in Miyazaki, so I could have positive attitude towards this work. I felt that I could help the development of Miyazaki. Translating work is a little hard, but it was a good challenge for me. I had never used my English skill for other people like I did during this fieldwork, so it took me much time. Through this field work, we could get to know a lot of great places in Aya town. Ms. Yamashita introduced us to these places, history, people and city officers’ work in Aya town. They were new for me even though I love Aya town and visited there many times. I feel that the time I spent in Aya town was well spent. Finally, Ms. Yamashita made an opportunity for an official ceremony to celebrate the completion of this translation project. At this ceremony, we could talk with the mayor of Aya town, Minoru Maeda, and we gave our finished translations to the representatives of Ayagawaso inn, Teruha-no-mori inn and Aya castle. I was a little nervous at this ceremony, but I was so glad our work will be useful for people in Aya town.
